You Will Never Be Satisfied with the WHY

Why does a perfectly healthy 32-year-old, new father of two young children die from a rare cancer diagnosis that affects less than 2000 people per year?

Was it the exposure to the sun when he surfed dawn patrol every morning as a kid?

Was it ingesting the polluted air or another toxin when he worked in Beijing, China for a year?

These are some of the questions that I asked myself as I searched for a reason behind my husband Ian's death.

My mind desperately sought logic -- a clear impetus for his diagnosis and death -- so that it could make sense of the tragedy I was now living.

After months or reckoning with the universe, blaming doctor’s and searching for answers, I came to the conclusion that Ian’s death was random.

I realized that lots of young people die, and that their deaths also had no rhyme or reason.

I accepted that his death is meaningless. And if I wanted to continue to live a life of meaning, purpose and joy, then I would have to create it!

This ah-ha moment gave me so much power!

I was able to shift my focus from all of the things outside of me that I literally had no control over or answers to — the universe, the doctors, the polluted air — to MYSELF!

It released me from the spiral of why me? so that I could start asking myself what now?

It forced me to FEEL my grief as I met every new layer of acceptance around Ian’s death.

It allowed me to become an observer of my experience of loss so that I could see the long-term trajectory, instead of being blindsided by the pain.

And it helped me recognize that there is no meaning in death.

Death is simply something that happens.

The meaning lives in YOU!

It resides in the stories you create about your loss and in the ways you choose to live your life after devastating loss — because as hard as it is to fathom…

Your life continues on.

Moving Beyond Why Me? To Meaning

Grief work is slow. It takes time for your body, mind and heart to process a loss of this magnitude — a loss that touches literally every facet of your life — let alone find meaning in the experience.

The process and timeline is unique and relative to each griever.

In this workshop, I’ll share how doing the work and self-inquiry around three key elements — Integration, Identity and Imagination — have personally supported me on my journey of healing, post-traumatic growth and creating a life full of meaning and purpose after my loss; and how you can apply them in your grief journey!

In this 90-min Master Class we will discuss…

  • How to Integrate your Loss
You don’t just move on from a loss. You don’t disconnect or let go of your deceased love one. You don’t bypass grief and get to growth and meaning. You integrate! Integration is about owning, experiencing and weaving ALL aspects of your loss — including the painful elements — into your life moving forward. I’ll provide you with tools, rituals, and options to help you integrate.
  • How to Understand your New Identity
You are whole…even though you feel broken. You are still you…but you don’t feel that way. This makes perfect sense. This is the integrated you! The version that has been broken — but broken open. To new ways of thinking, relating to others and experiencing life. I’ll help you get curious about the new person you are becoming on your path to finding purpose!

  • How to Access Imagination to Reclaim your Life
You look ahead to the blank slate of a future. There’s fear, there’s uncertainty — a vast unknown. It’s hard to envision what life could be like now without your person in it. It takes massive thinking outside of the box and a stretch of imagination! Imagination is the ability to see beyond what is. I’ll share how curiosity and creativity can transform your fear of the future into excitement, and help you embrace the mystery of the unknown.
