My Story …
When my 32-year old husband passed away from cancer leaving me a solo mom of two, I believed that I was the only young widow on the face of the earth. I was living my worst nightmare!
My life had become some tragic love story where I lost my soul-mate and best friend, the father of my one and three-year-old, and our perfect, white-picket fence life together.
Ian was healthy. He wasn’t supposed to die that young. It wasn’t fair that other children had their father but mine didn’t! I felt like my kids were doomed for disappointment and failure, never knowing their biological father and having to feel that void as the grew up.
As time passed and dove into my healing, my story of my husband’s death began to change.
Ian had still passed away at the age of 32 from Uveal Melanoma, but the narrative didn’t seem so hopeless and tragic. In fact, there were entirely new themes and chapters emerging!
I realized that I wasn’t alone and that many young men (and women) die. Changing this narrative freed me from my story of victimhood and catapulted me into a story of survival.

I started to see death as a passage, not something to be feared or beat. Setting a new tone around death released the stigma and healed the trauma around my story of Ian’s passing.
I noticed my inner growth & resilience, and new perspective on life from living the experience of loss. Focusing on the gifts in grief instead of just the gaps gave new meaning to my loss.
My story continued to change as I shared it on social media and received messages from countless widows telling me how much my words helped them heal. It was at that point that I decided I would use my story to heal, inspire and empower others who were walking a similar path.
In doing so…
I healed
I grew
I found new meaning, and
I re-claimed my story on loss!
And now I want to share this life-changing work with you.
The facts of the death stay the same. But your story changes.
Events happen in life. YOU give them meaning.
A loved one dying is a FACT. You create the story around it.
In the early months of grief following my husband’s death, my story on loss was one of tragedy and hardship. Now, four years since his passing, my story is one of survival, transformation and rebirth.
It can be difficult to separate the facts of the loss from the stories.
Humans are meaning making machines; and the lens from which we view the world through, has a major impact on our lived reality.
Societal influences like culture or religion; family upbringing and past trauma all influence the way we see, and thus behave in the world. This is the process of conditioning and unless you understand what sub-conscious programming is driving your actions, it’s hard to discern what’s an actual truth vs. a tale.
Why this matters in grief?
Your conditioning and past trauma shapes your experience of loss. It influences how you perceive death, struggle, pain and hardship and affects your ability to bounce back. When you untangle these beliefs and make them conscious, you can start to separate the facts of the loss from the story to …
Heal old wounds
Embrace your grief
Reduce your suffering
Find meaning in your loss
Because you are in control of the narrative!
