Anxiety, the Missing Stage of Grief

There’s a reason why Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and New York Times bestselling author Claire Bidwell Smith titled her book on grief and healing just this!

The anxiety after a loss is SO REAL!

After my husband’s death three years ago, I was completely overwhelmed trying to take on the household responsibilities of combining two roles into one.

On top of all the logistics of loss, I also felt consumed by the intense emotions experienced in grief.

I felt tense, jumpy, and constantly irritable. My heart would race with the break of day and end in sleepless nights as I tried to navigate this new nightmare I was living.

After getting curious about grief, I learned that anxiety was another common emotion experienced during the grief process and I explored ways to support myself.

I soon discovered that moving my body was an effective way for me to control my spinning mind and settle my palpating heart, so that I could find peace amongst the chaos of my life.

As I felt more calm and connected, I could then get curious about what my anxiety was trying to tell me.

This became a practice of tuning into my emotions, owning them (instead of judging them), feeling them, and understanding the reason behind them.

This is how I eventually learned to embrace grief.

And now I want to share these tools and practices with you!

Why you Feel this Way

Anxiety might not be the first emotion you think of in relation to grief. But, for anyone who has lost someone dear to them, it’s a feeling that is very prevalent, all consuming and at times, can feel impossible to manage.

Anxiety is experienced in relation to a stress — the body’s response to a real or a perceived threat. When someone who you love dies, your entire world becomes a very threatening place.

Your environment might feel unpredictable and scary; your body and mind responds in ways that you are not used to; a new list of logistical issues now needs to be resolved; and the combination of these events taking place simultaneously leads to overwhelm and panic.

If you are feeling…

  • Overwhelmed or flooded by your emotion
  • Experiencing panic attacks
  • Feeling constantly irritable
  • Worried about someone else dying or getting hurt
  • Having difficulty self-regulating

This workshop is for you!

In this workshop we will explore the many ways that anxiety can manifest in your body, how to cope with these intense feelings through mindful movement, tapping and breath, and how to embrace them as a natural response to our loss.
